The Women’s Center Sponsors Strong Women, Strong Girls program
On Saturday, December 12th, the Strong Women, Strong Girls program at FIU concluded its third semester of programming with girls in grades 3 – 5 throughout the Miami-Dade school system. Eighteen FIU women students provided afterschool programming to more than 120 girls at 10 community and school sites. Strong Women, Strong Girls is a nation-wide program which seeks to empower young girls to be the best they can be, developing their skills and positive self esteem. The curriculum utilizes 10 strong women in the present or in history and focuses on communication, unique talents, cultural sensitivity, stress management and critical thinking skills. One mentor commented, “My favorite lesson was cultural sensitivity. We used Michelle Obama as a role model, taking a look at ‘a day in her life’ to talk about proper etiquette, and ways to interact with different people with respect. The girls loved it and I was pleased to see that our girls were so receptive to the importance of being culturally sensitive; that concept can be hard for young children to understand.”
