The South Florida Center of Excellence at FIU Distinguishes itself at State Summit

FIU’s National Achievers Society scored some of the top honors at the Florida Education Fund’s 27th Annual Brain Bowl Competition and National Achievers Summit in Orlando this past March. The Summit is an annual conference for National Achievers from across the state to be recognized for their academic and leadership, to attend workshops, to meet with college representatives, and to network with each other. The Brain Bowl competitions are also held in both Math and Black History and Culture, after local regional competitions throughout the state.
Teams representing FIU did extremely well this year. The 9th and 10th grade math team went undefeated in their division and won what is for some members of the team, a third straight championship. They were coached by FIU student and AmeriCorps volunteer Melissa Del Toro. Our nominee for a state office, Tyler Daniels, came in second and will serve as vice-president of the state student board for the next two years. As a Center, South Florida came away with the trophy for the Largest Parent Delegation again this year. Over 45 parents attended the Summit, taking a 3 am bus to Orlando for the day’s events. Finally, our South Florida Director, José Filpo, was selected as the Director of the Year by the other center directors.
