Last month, the FIU Diversity Day Committee planned FIU’s 9th Annual Diversity Day on the Biscayne Bay Campus. The event represents BBC’s longstanding tradition of celebrating diversity. The day is planned by a faculty-staff-student committee consisting of members representing the many diverse communities on campus.
Diversity Day was about unification, but also, an opportunity to engage in an open dialogue on race, diversity (and its definition), sexual orientation, cultural politics, gender issues, disability, and socio-cultural stratifications and acceptance. The events of the day included a resource fair, a keynote speaker, a debate regarding Amendment 2, and a public speaking contest featuring several of our talented students.
With a modest budget and co-sponsorship from the BBC Student Government Council, Diversity Day was a big success. |
