BBC WUC Panther Square
caps.fiu.edu

CAPS will be offering 15-minute drop-in sessions to students, which are designed to provide students with an in-the-moment opportunity to process their thoughts, feelings, and frustrations about the college process. These sessions on stress management, time management, and adapting to college will be scheduled between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. during the first week of school (August 20, 21, 22, and 24). Along with the topics and pamphlets available for time management, stress management, and adapting to college, other resources will be available to help students deal with problems related to procrastination, anxiety, depression, and other challenges college students normally face. For students who visit the table, they will receive one free snack and a drink. These drop-in sessions will be held at the BBC WUC Panther Square.

October 2 at BBC/October 5 at MMC
National Depression Awareness Day
10 am – 2 pm

October 3 at BBC and October 4 at MMC
National Depression Screening Day
10 am – 2 pm

CAPS will sponsor National Depression Awareness Day on October 2 at BBC and on October 5 at MMC and National Depression Screening Day on October 3 at BBC and October 4 at MMC. These events raise awareness about depression and related mood and anxiety disorders. The free, anonymous screenings help individuals understand the difference between mild, moderate, and severe levels of depression, bipolar, and anxiety disorders while also providing treatment resources, when necessary. National Depression Screening Day is the nation’s oldest voluntary, community-based screening program that provides referral information for treatment. More than half a million people each year have been screened for depression since 1991. Our goal is to provide this type of awareness and education for our students at FIU.

October 29 – November 2
CAPSapalooza 2012!: National College Alcohol & Drug Awareness Week
BBC Panther Square & MMC Graham Center
caps.fiu.edu

Counseling & Psychological Services will celebrate CAPSapalooza 2012!, which is the second annual National College Alcohol and Drug Awareness Week at Florida International University Biscayne Bay and Modesto Maidique Campuses. CAPSapalooza 2012! Celebration begins on October 29 until November 2. The purpose of the week is to increase students’ awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug use while also using an interactive approach to educate students about the dangers of excessive or inappropriate use of substances and the resources that are available to them on campus and in the community. This multi-day event will be co-sponsored by the University Health and Wellness Centers and Active Minds. Active Minds is a student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy organization whose purpose is to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues, to provide information and resources regarding mental health and mental illness, and to serve as a liaison between students and the mental health community.  This event will be held on October 30 - 31 at BBC and on November 1 - 2 at MMC with a bi-campus event on October 29.
