Congratulation Dr. Larry Lunsford, Appointed Interim Vice President for Student Affairs

All of us in the Division want to congratulate Dr. Larry Lunsford for his appointment as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs!

Dr. Lunsford came to FIU from Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania in November, 1989. Before accepting the Interim Vice President position, he was the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and University Ombudsman where he was responsible for Student Affairs long-range planning, program development and evaluation, policy research and development, strategic planning, division publications, Greek housing, and assisting with 25 division departments as well as being the University Ombudsman. Dr. Lunsford serves on numerous university committees and holds positions in many professional organizations such as NASPA, Student Affairs Today, and Society of Professional Journalists.

Dr. Lunsford has expressed the goal to deliver Worlds Ahead programs and services in Student Affairs by always remaining relevant to the changing nature of students, the university community and the community at large. He recognizes that Student Affairs plays an important role in assisting students to approach complex problems ethically and thoughtfully by preparing them to become citizens of the world. He hopes to lead the Division of Student Affairs to accomplish its roles and responsibilities by:

1. Developing a vision using a participatory process, which he will then articulate to the division.
2. Surrounding himself with talented people who are experts in their discipline and committed to providing excellence.
3. Being outcome driven. Providing an environment where we can be successful and effective.
4. Assessing the progress made toward our goals. He is a leader who is willing to listen, learn and seek input.

He has an open door policy with students and staff and is looking forward to creating vibrant programs and services and opportunities that encourage learning, discovery, and engagement that contribute to a high quality of life for the entire FIU community.
