Strong Women, Strong Girls: Making a Difference in Our Community

The Center for Leadership and Service and the Women’s Center have partnered with Strong Women, Strong Girls to facilitate a mentoring relationship between FIU women students and at-risk girls in 3rd – 5th grades throughout Miami-Dade. This fall, 15 FIU women are facilitating the curriculum in after-school programs at Marjorie Stoneham, Tacolcy, Shake- A Leg, North Shore, Vineland, Parkway and Skyway. The curriculum focuses on self-esteem, with students learning about the stories of phenomenal women in history. In addition, we have developed a partnership with Americorps to provide stipends for 7 of our student mentors who have chosen to take on a leadership component of the program. On Saturday, October 2nd, the Women’s Center, CLS and SWSG facilitated training for mentors at FIU and Miami-Dade Homestead and Wolfson campuses.
