As part of a regular feature, one department in Student affairs will be in the spotlight each month. This month we spotlight Recreation Services (MMC)

Mission Statement

In support of the mission of the University and the Division of Student Affairs, Recreation Services promotes active, healthy lifestyles for FIU’s vibrant and diverse community through quality participation opportunities, educational experiences, and support services.

• Recreation Facilities (Recreation Center, Panther Hall Pool, Tennis Center, Recreation Field, USCB Arena Racquetball Courts)

• PantherFIT Group Fitness Classes

• Adventure Recreation trips & outings

Programs & Events

• Annual Ski and Whitewater Rafting trips – coordinating outdoor recreation opportunities such as these and others to more local destinations for students, faculty, staff, and their guests
• Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Mercedes Benz Corporation Run- coordinating Team FIU’s participation in these major community run/walk charity events
• Sports Gift – collecting and donating new and lightly-used sports-related equipment to kids around the world through the Sports Gift program
• FIU “Lose It” Weight Loss Program – based upon “The Biggest Loser” format
• Student Health 101 – in cooperation with University Health Services and Residential Life, produce a health and wellness-related e-zine distributed to freshmen, housing residents and transfers
• WOW (Women on Weights) and Boot Camp – specialized fitness classes for faculty & staff
• Group Fitness Instructor Certifications – training and certification in various group fitness formats such as BodyPump®, BodyCombat®, and Spinning®

Recreation Services Student Staff

Over 120 students each year work for Recreation Services as Customer Service Attendants, Weight Room Attendants, Building Supervisors, Lifeguards, Intramural Officials and Supervisors, Group Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainers, Athletic Trainers, and Tennis Instructors.
