Departmental Spotlight

As part of a regular feature, one department in Student affairs will be in the spotlight each month. This month we spotlight Biscayne Bay Campus Recreation.

Mission Statement
Biscayne Bay Campus Recreation offers an environment that enhances students’ academic experiences and self identity, by providing opportunities for the development of a healthy lifestyle, lifelong friendships and the advancement of the university experience.

Services
The Fitness Center is a state of the art facility that allows all visitors the opportunity to exercise the mind and body in a fun and safe environment on campus. Located in WUC 160, the Fitness Center opened in October 2007 and is now one of the main “hot spots” on the Biscayne Bay Campus. The facility is accessible to FIU students, faculty and staff as well as the outside community; non-students must purchase a membership at our front desk. The Facility includes:

• Cardio Village equipped with Life Fitness Treadmills
• Stair climbers
• Locker rooms with showers
• Towel service
• Ten flat screen televisions on the main floor
• Total body trainers • Recumbent and Upright Exercise Bikes
• Hammer Strength Free Weights Section
• Separated aerobics room overlooking the beautiful Biscayne Bay
• Diversified group exercise schedule
• Access to the Aquatic Center

• The Aquatic Center is fully furnished and provides an environment for conversation, study, or sunbathing. The multipurpose design of the 50-meter by 25-yard pool and diving well allow for recreational and instructional use.
• Learn to Swim Classes offered Spring, Summer, and Fall
• FIU Members $35, Non-Members $45
• Student Pool Parties • Aqua Aerobics – Beginning March 2011
• Scuba Classes – For credit classes including PEN 2136 Basic Scuba Lab, PEN 2137 Advanced Scuba, PEN 218 Scuba Rescue Diving, PEN 4135 Scuba Leadership
• Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor classes offered by the American Red Cross
