The Supervisor of the Year Award is designed to recognize an individual who demonstrates excellent supervisory skills. This individual is fair and ethical, and encourages the development of staff. This individual has the ability to listen to all points of view and is able to make fair decisions.

This past October, The Supervisor of the Year Award was presented to Ivette Duarte of Career Services.

Ivette has been with FIU for over 20 years. During this time, she has supervised numerous staff, and has done so with great care and compassion. Ivette has been known to drop everything to support her staff and make a project successful. Ivette’s nurturing demeanor affords her the ability to recognize the skills of her staff and encourage them to strive for improvement.

Part of Ivette’s supervision includes supporting her staff inside and outside of work. If a staff member is out due to a sick child at home, Ivette has been known to call home to check up not only on staff, but their family members as well. Ivette shows a genuine concern for others around her.

One of Ivette’s nominators said, “Ivette’s leadership is not defined by a title, but by her actions, her kind words of approval, and her ability to do the right thing.”

We are proud to have Ivette Duarte as a member of The Division of Student Affairs and we wish her well in her appointment as the Interim Director of Career Services.
