Jose Toscano / May 2012

The Student Mentor Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated a sincere commitment to helping students, either as a group advisor, or one who is actively involved in the academic and/or personal development of students. This individual promotes student learning and development, through their guidance and assistance. The recipient of this Award at last fall’s Student Affairs Distinguished Performance Awards ceremony was Jose Toscano.
Jose Toscano, Associate Director of Campus Life, advises the Student Government Association and the Homecoming Council, the two largest and most prominent student organizations on campus. Jose also serves as a faculty advisor for a fraternity, sorority and several other student organizations. Jose is very direct and honest with his students about how to improve, but also fast to offer support and acknowledgement of their successes. He has negotiated and advised students through difficult situations and has allowed them to see all sides of a situation.
Jose’s impact on students is best summed up by his nominator who said, “Students seek Mr. Toscano out because of his genuine concern for their well-being. I have been to three SGA End of the year banquets, and in each one, the students have broken down into tears talking about the impact Mr. Toscano had on their lives.”
Clearly Jose is a role model to all of us who advise and mentor students. We are proud to have Jose Toscano as a member of The Division of Student Affairs.
