     The TIRES Summer Institute is an exciting scholarly and professional development opportunity for graduate and advanced honors students who envision working academically or professionally with issues concerning the transnational and comparative dimensions of immigration, race and xenophobia. This three-week residential program was designed to provide students with hands-on learning about contemporary issues of international migration and its impacts on US and European societies.

     During the 2002 Miami Summer Institute, students explored, via lectures and group discussion, transnational and comparative US-European dimensions of contemporary refugee, immigration and integration issues. The presentations and discussions were led by US and European faculty members who are experts in these field. The Institute utilized Miami’s status as a major destination point for asylum and migration flows as well as an urban laboratory for adaptation and integration issues. A variety of field visits served to highlight and reinforce the issues discussed in the panels and lectures. Students also presented their own research proposals/papers and received feedback from faculty.

Participants and Eligibility:
     Participation was limited to approximately 25 graduate and advanced honors students drawn primarily from the European and US TIRES partner institutions. Individuals who are enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program at a non-TIRES partner institution could also apply.

Preference was given to students based on the following criteria:

1) students who have completed most degree requirements but have not begun Ph.D. or MA thesis research;
2) coherence, feasibility and relevance of students’ career objectives and proposed program of study;
3) students who have demonstrated competency in more than one of the TIRES languages;
4) excellence in prior academic accomplishment, especially in TIRES-related coursework and experience.

Costs and Financial Support:
     There is no charge or tuition for the program itself. The estimated cost for room and meals is $1,500. This does NOT include airfare or travel to Miami. Click here for details.
European students may apply for the FIPSE-EC graduate mobility awards for financial support. Check with your home institution for details.

US students should check with their home institution’s academic department and/or TIRES Program Coordinator for suggestions about possible funding venues.
