DESCRIPTION: Operates comprehensive after-school care programs
at 113 Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Programs provide structured activities
including snack time, homework, and recreational events. Many sites offer
activities such as scouting, 4-H, tutorial sessions, music, ceramics,
computers, and drama. Goals of the program include helping children build
physical skills and develop self-confidence, resourcefulness, ability
to get along with others, and have a daily sense of community.
OPPORTUNITIES: Assist with the activities listed above. You will
be supervised by trained staff that will provide opportunities for you
to work with elementary children based upon your interests and skills.
Also, reading tutors are needed in sites to work with children using the
America Reads curriculum and Buddy Reading.
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday, 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. year round.
COMMENTS: Please call for more information. Program coordinators
will place you at a school based on your interests, course assignment,
and geographic location. You will be expected to put in at least two hours
a week for a minimum of 10 weeks.

DESCRIPTION: Provides one-on-one tutoring for elementary &
middle school children to build self-confidence in their academic ability.
OPPORTUNITIES: Spend one to three hours a week (or more!) working
with one child. Serve as a role model and friend, assist with homework,
playing games, reading, etc. (These kids love M-DCC students!)
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday, 2:30 - 7:30 p.m. Program runs in
hour shifts.
ORIENTATION: Contact Daisy for the current training schedule.
COMMENTS: Minimum commitment is one hour a week. Volunteers are
assigned one child per shift from the lengthy waiting list. Your assigned
child depends on you to show up each week at your scheduled time! Therefore,
you must make a commitment and stick to it! Many more children want to
participate in the program but can't due to the lack of volunteer tutors.

DESCRIPTION: The All-Aboard Tutoring/Mentoring program is an early
intervention educational program designed to improve the academic performance
of at-risk children in order to prevent failure in Kindergarten and First
Grade. All-Aboard has the ability to place volunteers in any Miami Dade
County Public Elementary School. All-Aboard is a collaborative effort
between The Children Psychiatric Center and Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers are trained to utilize the All-Aboard
Picture Alphabet Book and Accelerated Reader to motivate their tutee and
increase academic success.
ADITIONAL OPPORTUNITY: Story hour at Homeless Assistance Center.
Read stories, lead activities for pre-k to 2nd grade children residing
at Miami and Homestead. Hour: 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month.
HOURS NEEDED: Volunteers tutor/mentor during regular school hours (8:30
a.m. - 3:00 p.m.), after school (3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday),
and during summer school sessions. Volunteers are asked to commit to twenty-four
(24) hours (1 to 2 hours per week).
TRAINING: Volunteers are required to complete a two-hour training
session. Training sessions are offered at the main All-Aboard office (15490
NW 7th Avenue) and at M-DCC.

AMERICA COUNTS TUTORIAL PROGRAM, Countywide opportunities with

DESCRIPTION: America Counts is a national initiative issued by
the Vice-President to increase school-age children's achievement in mathematics
and science. Math and science tutors are needed to help students in grades
K-8 get ready for algebra and geometry by the eighth grade. Anyone with
strong math skills and/or an interest in science is encouraged to participate.
0PPORTUNITIES: Tutoring opportunities are available at elementary
& middle schools and public libraries throughout Miami-Dade.
HOURS NEEDED: Tutors are needed in various after-school sites,
Monday-Friday from 2:00pm-6:00pm. Limited opportunities available during
the school day, Monday-Friday 8am-2:30pm and on Saturdays with the PLASMAS
enrichment program in several public libraries in Miami-Dade County.

DESCRIPTION: The American High Adult Center works with adults in
vocational classes as well as Basic Education classes.
OPPORTUNITIES: Service-learners have the opportunity to work with
Adult Basic Education (ABE) students in the areas of reading, writing,
and math. Service-learners will either work with students one to one or
in-groups. Opportunities are also available for students to work on special
events.

DESCRIPTION: The American Cancer Society's Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge
Center is a home away from home for cancer patients and their families
while undergoing cancer treatment. Residents stay free of charge for an
unlimited length of time while in daily cancer treatment.

DESCRIPTION: AHA Youth Market Program includes: Jump Rope for the
Heart, Heart Power and Hoops for Heart. These programs are designed to
work with students to emphasize the importance of a healthy life style,
including physical activity, eating properly and living tobacco free,
as well as to help the children learn the importance of community service.
Programs offer education enhancement to the school programs.
OPPORTUNITIES: Spend required hours in office scheduling appointments,
following up on calls and events. The liaison between the marketing directors
and the school system (teachers, coaches, principles, etc.) Will help
school volunteers with implementation of materials, and describe programs.
Can attend school events, if able.

AMERICAN LITTORAL SOCIETY, CAPE FLORIDA PROJECT, 1200 South Crandon

DESCRIPTION: The Cape Florida Project is an ecological restoration
aimed at restoring native plant communities to the 406-acre park located
on the southern tip of Key Biscayne. The Society is working in partnership
with the Florida Park Service to restore the natural biological diversity
to the barrier island Park.
OPPORTUNITIES: Hands-on work experience in the environmental sciences
in three main areas: 1) exotic control (manually remove targeted species),
2) nursery operations (300 native species cultivated on site), and 3)
out planting native species.
HOURS NEEDED: Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m. - noon or 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
shifts; Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m. - noon.
A minimum commitment of 15 hours is required. (Don't try to do them all
in one week. This project is rewarding but physically challenging!!
COMMENTS: Call the American Littoral Society and arrange to go
to work (individually), or arrange a group/class project. Park is open
seven days a week. This project is especially appropriate for natural
science majors or anyone interested in environmental issues.
AMERICA READS/BUDDY READING TUTORIAL PROGRAM, Countywide opportunities

DESCRIPTION: Reading is critical for success in school and life;
unfortunately 40% of fourth graders read below grade level. With additional
support from citizens of all walks of life--teachers, parents, business
people, seniors and students, children who are behind in their reading
skills can improve their chances for success in school. America Reads
is a challenge from the President of the United States to all Americans
to help children read at grade level by the end of third grade.
0PPORTUNITIES: Tutors are needed to work with children in grades
K-3. Tutoring is done one-on-one in 30-minute increments. There are two
programs available: 1) Buddy Reading requires a two-hour training and
offers more flexibility in scheduling and placement sites. 2) America
Reads requires a four-hour training and a commitment of at least one hour,
two days per week. These tutors would commit to working with the same
child twice a week for a half an hour. An excellent choice for education
majors! Please contact our office for further information. Each program
has opportunities in school sites throughout Miami-Dade County.

DESCRIPTION: Acts as a residential preschool, training performance
for handicapped/mentally challenged children and adults. Approximately
48 residents are on-site.
OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers are needed in the preschool to act as
teacher's aides assisting the teacher with the children. Also needed for
the Buddy Program. Students will become a friend to a physically or mentally
handicapped person in their late teens to early twenties.
HOURS NEEDED: M-F, 8:30am - 5:00pm.
COMMENTS: Students must attend an orientation session prior to
volunteering. This is an excellent opportunity for students considering
going into physical therapy, speech therapy, or special education. Volunteers
must schedule an appointment for a tour of the center and to meet with
potential buddies. Volunteers must commit to at least two visits per month
of at least half hour each.

DESCRIPTION: Art Center/South Florida's mission is to advance the
knowledge and practice of contemporary visual arts in South Florida. The
organization is committed to supporting visual artists and making art

The mission is manifested through our three program components; the Juried
Artist Program, our exhibition season, and our multiple education programs.
Based in our three historic buildings on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Art
Center exists to provide affordable workspace for outstanding visual artists
in all stages of career development. Exhibitions of contemporary art are
presented year-round in our public gallery spaces and display windows.
Art Center has received recognition from local media such as New Times,
which in 1997 called us the "best gallery in Miami", and from
