DESCRIPTION: Provides homemaker, home health aide, chore respite, and companionship services to the homebound elderly, and disabled in order to avoid institutionalization (i.e. so they can continue to live at home).
OPPORTUNITIES: Home visits, phone reassurance, emergency shopping, writing letters, reading books to the blind, errands, companionship, fund raising, enrollment & admissions, administrative/office help, computer work, nutritional counseling etc. Special Projects.
HOURS NEEDED/SCHEDULE: Flexible, 7 days a week, evenings. You must commit to at least 2 hours a week for at least 10 weeks.
COMMENTS: Call the volunteer coordinator and arrange an interview. She can place you all over Miami-Dade County, based on your needs. You must complete a 1-hour orientation done by the coordinator. This agency serves 7,000 in Miami-Dade County and has a waiting list of 2,500. A great opportunity to learn about the elderly and disabled--and make their (& your!) life brighter. The only requirement is a willingness to learn and sensitivity to the needs of the elderly and disabled adults. A background check and criminal history is done by UHCS before you can begin.
