PUBLIC PROGRAMS Spring 2012
These programs are free and open to the general public. The lectures
are generally geared to non-scientists and people who are
curious about the nature of the world they live in and typically last an hour.
"Student Observatory Celebration Star Party" January 27, 2012 @ 8:00 pm. in CP 145 and at student observing pad. Dr. Webb will unveil the plans for the new Stocker AstroScience Center, and tell you all about the designs! Also some music later in the evening. Telescopes will be set up if weather is clear.
"The Physics of Star Trek" February 10, 2012 @ 8:00 pm. Location: CP 145. Dr. Webb will talk about the realities and non-realities of things like warp speed, photon torpedos, and teleportation. As usual, munchies during the evening and telescopes will be set up after the talk if weather permits.
"Apollo 11: The Real Star Trek" March 2, 2012 @ 8:00 pm. Location: CP 145. FIU Physics professor Dr. Webb will take you back to 1969 when humans actually were space travelers and walked on another celestial body. Those were the days! Where have they gone? Why? Telescopes and observing at the student observatory follows if weather permits.
"The James Webb Space Telescope" MArch 23, 2012@ 8:00 pm. Location: CP 145. NASA project scientist will be in town to talk about the future "Great Observatory" which has a really cool name! Telescope and Observing at the student observing pad if weather permits.
"End of Semester Star Party" April 20, 2012 in CP 145 @ 8:00 pm
Location: CP 145. Music, telescopes, munchies, and door prizes. Telescopes, munchies, music and astronomers. Doesn't get any better than that!
