BSC 6926 Workshop in Culturing Primary Brain Cells

Cell culture model systems for cell types and regions in the nervous system have been very important in allowing the study of neural processes at the cellular and molecular levels, and have helped us understand underlying mechanisms of the vertebrate nervous system, a very complex and cellularly heterogenous system.

This workshop on culturing primary brain cells is to guide you progressively through the fundamental steps necessary for successfully growing and maintaining primary brain cells.

The workshop is divided into three parts:

1. Theoretically learning how to set-up and equip a cell culture laboratory; sterilization of fluids & equipment; culture media; culture technique & primary culture; prevention, detection & remedies for contamination and good laboratory practice in the cell culture laboratory.

2. Practically applying techniques learned by preparing instruments, solutions, equipment, etc., in readiness for growing and maintaining cultured brain cells.

3. 2-3 person Teams harvesting & maintaining a selected brain cell type culture.
